X-Meritan now offers Peltier cooling modules with up to four stages in volume. If a single stage is insufficient to provide the required temperature differential, Multistage Thermoelectric Coolers are your best option. Each additional stage increases the temperature differential, but also power consumption. This results in a relative decrease in cooling capacity and efficiency as the number of stages increases.
Multi-stage thermoelectric coolers are solid-state devices with no moving parts that transfer heat when powered and can operate over a wide temperature range. Their theoretical basis is the Peltier effect, a phenomenon discovered by French physicist Jean Peltier in 1834.
The Multistage Thermoelectric Cooler's structure consists of positively and negatively doped semiconductor material particles placed between two electrically insulating but thermally conductive ceramic plates. A metallic conductive pattern is plated on the inner surface of each ceramic plate, and the semiconductor pellets are soldered to the conductive pattern. This modular configuration connects all semiconductor chips electrically in series and mechanically in parallel. The series electrical connection achieves the desired thermal effect, while the parallel mechanical configuration allows heat to be absorbed and released by one ceramic plate and then released by the other. Each stage is stacked one layer at a time.
